“Reflections of an Anxious African American Dad” by Eric L. Heard is a heart touching memoir about the author, his son and the stories they have as well as their experiences.

I found this book very emotional, honest and interesting as it was quite a unique experience for me to understand and know the story from the perspective of an African American person. Though at the same time, this book has a lot of things that I was able to relate to, so I’d say that it has a lot to offer to its readers.

I found the narration very simple, elegant as well as introspective and found myself drawn and submerged in the stories and experiences shared by the author in an elegant way. I’d recommend this book to everyone who reads memoirs. It is a quick read and that too an interesting one with unique insights”

why this book Who Should Read the Book

“Eric L. Heard in Reflections of an Anxious African American Dad recounts his early years (childhood to high school) in an effort to lay the groundwork for the life education of his grade school son. ……

…….Mr. Heard’s is an inspiring story, elevating him in becoming an “emboldened writer” and bravely honest in describing the tough challenges he faced in freeing himself from the “invisible fence” and the systemic inequities that hold back so many. He understands the future hurdles of urging his son in the right direction and realizes the dangers of overreacting to his son’s missteps.

Reflections of an Anxious African American Dad by Eric L. Heard is a gut-wrenching but inspiring read, and I look forward eagerly to the next installment.”

This episode jolted me into making another connection between my childhood and how I was acting as a parent with my son. I would take actions to ensure that what had haunted our family tree for generations would not happen to him. I knew it would require some radical steps. One of those actions was writing a book that he can share with his family after I leave this earth. When he thinks about the times I would not go with him to the baseball game or to his school assembly, this book will provide the answers when he reads between the lines.

I hope this book will help others who don’t have their stories told anywhere in the media. There are other African American men dealing with their childhood experiences and wanting to insulate their sons and daughters from the echoes and continued grasp of systematic racism. I grew up during an era of seismic changes that saw whole communities decimated. The mental anguish quietly pushed African American dads to find a way to deal with an unforgiving world. These dads are looking to raise kids while at the same time reconciling crushing pain.

I would like this book to be an acknowledgment of that pain and let them know they are not alone.

“I will start by saying this book went beyond my expectations. Not because I expected it to be awful, but I was concerned about how I could relate to the book. However, I left with so much wisdom and insight into how my childhood experiences have impacted my adulthood.

I love his vulnerability and how he painted his struggles as life-altering in good and bad ways. I went in expecting to hear about fatherhood experiences as a Black man dealing with anxiety. However, I received an eye-opening look into the life that shaped him into the man he is today. The use of analogies and self-reflection led me to think about my life and how I achieved similar life lessons. Every chapter had a word of wisdom. My favorite two were ” an irrational thought can spiral into unreasonable actions that can affect the next generation’s ability to heal” and “triggers are sneaky and can be transferred to kids if you are not careful.” These two stood out to me because both have impacted me, and it charged me to think about how I will intentionally prevent or rectify instances of these with my future children. Overall, I think this is an amazing book for everyone to read regardless of their background. I think you will find something that you can identify with. …….”
